How Coutts Travel Protection insures you away from home
Our travel protection is designed exclusively for our clients, with 93 days, unlimited medical cover and no additional fee if clients hold over £1 million with us – we believe it to be among the best in the travel insurance market, says Relationship and Rewards Manager, Irene Collins.
“There are a number of reasons why we believe our travel protection is perfect for busy clients and their families, travelling abroad for business or on holiday,” says Irene. “We strongly believe our cover is on par with the most competitive offerings out there.”
What are the benefits?
- We cover up to 93 days abroad for each trip.
- We cover up to 28 days winter sports for each trip.
- We offer unlimited emergency medical cover.
- We cover children up to 23 if still in full time education.
- We have a very high level of baggage insurance – up to £10,000 per beneficiary allowance and with a single article insurance of up to £1,000.
- Our cancellation cover is £15,000 per beneficiary.
- We can offer a gap year extension for children between 18 and 23 if they’re in full time education and have evidence of a university or college placement offer.
- No upper age limit.
How effective is the cover?
“Where it is covered and there is clearly a claim to be paid, we do our utmost to ensure clients get what they need, wherever they are in the world,” says Irene.
Coutts Travel Protection received an average of 96 claims a month in 2023 with an average payout ratio of 97%.
“We treat clients fairly and stick to the true interpretation of terms and conditions allowing for a case-by-case rationale that’s fair,” says Irene.
“We work with global insurer Allianz who are able to exercise their worldwide expertise and broad presence in the travel sector. This was really useful in the pandemic when they were able to secure refunds for a good number of bookings in countries in lockdown.”
Who is covered?
Clients and their families are covered including children up to 18 years old, or 23 years old if still in full time education, spouses, or partners with whom they’ve been in a relationship over six months.
What are the costs?
There’s no additional cost to benefit from the cover for any client with over a £1 million in combined assets and liabilities with Coutts – but they must opt in.
For clients with less than £1 million, the cost is £400 a year, payable £100 quarterly in arrears.

Emergency medical treatment
“Sometimes a client might need to make a claim after they’ve received medical assistance or treatment,” says Irene. “For example, if you (or a loved one) is skiing, you might have an accident and need some extremely urgent medical treatment – and therefore, understandably, you’re probably not going to be thinking about calling your insurer first. In that case we’ll ensure you’re covered for treatment, subject to the terms and conditions, even if you get in touch after you’ve received it. Clients shouldn’t get caught in the middle of an insurance claim, especially if they’re vulnerable in hospital.”
Cancelled holidays
“Likewise, if a client falls foul of airport strikes and their flight is cancelled, we’ll do the research to make sure their claim stands – within reason. For example, if there was no reasonable way for them to know about the strikes in advance and the airline was still taking bookings then they should get a full a refund from the airline and be able to claim on their cover for any accommodation they were unable to use. Our relationship with Allianz allows us to make sure our clients have fair and appropriate cover in these situations.”
Bereavements
“In the past, in the terrible case of a bereavement, we’ve also been able to help clients. Our private bankers can take their cases in hand to ensure their insurance concerns are covered during extremely stressful times,” says Irene. “We know these can be really terrible moments, so we’ll always strive to do the right thing.”
