helping you help the planet

From guiding your business through the transition to net zero to making your home more energy efficient, our range of climate financing and support tools, could help your goals become reality.

Addressing the climate crisis would appear to begin at home. Residential property represents 16% of the UK’s total carbon emissions, according to the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (as at February 2022). So getting your house in order could be one of the best ways to contribute to a more sustainable future.

And we’re here to help. Whether you’re buying an energy efficient property or making your current home more sustainable, we could give you helpful tips and financial support.

Here at Coutts, we take climate change extremely seriously, so we support our clients’ efforts to reduce their carbon footprints. Our ambition is that 50% of our mortgage portfolio has an EPC rating of C or above by 2030.

You could get up to £2,000 off your mortgage fee

Our Green Mortgage Products are our way of rewarding clients who either buy an EPC rating reference building or renovate an existing one to reduce their carbon footprint.

We measure and track the carbon footprint of homes through their Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) – the standard government measure of a property’s energy efficiency which provides a grade from A to G.

We currently offer two Green Mortgage Products:

Green mortgage

  • Our Coutts Green Mortgage could reward you for buying an energy-efficient property.
  • It involves a potential discount of up to £2,000 if you’re intending to buy an energy-efficient home with an EPC rating of grade A or B. The amount you get back depends on how much you borrow.

Retrofit Green Mortgage

  • Our Retrofit Green Mortgage could reward you for renovating an existing property to make it more energy efficient.
  • It involves a potential discount of up to £2,000 on your original mortgage arrangement fee once the improvements to your home are made, and its EPC grade has gone up to a C or above. You have 24 months from taking the mortgage to achieve the rating, and the amount you get back depends on how much you borrow.

When issuing Green Mortgage Products, we adopt the Green Home Retrofit Finance Principles, which ensure loans are given only to energy-efficiency work that meets industry-accepted standards in the UK.

Speak to your private banker to find out more.

Your home or property may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage. Over-18s only. Terms and conditions apply.

You may not be eligible for all Coutts Green Mortgage Products. Security may be required. Product fees may apply. Subject to status.

Many people are choosing to retrofit their homes to reduce their energy consumption and carbon emissions. This can involve improving the insulation in your property or switching to renewable energy sources. The results can bring you a number of benefits alongside reducing your carbon footprint, such as lowering your household bills and making your home more comfortable.

You can learn more about Retrofitting at our saving energy at home webpage, which answers some common questions and details the potential challenges and  benefits of retrofitting across different property types. We've also created specific guides covering improvements like home insulation, solar panels, and heat pumps.

If you feel a retrofit is right for you, you can use our NatWest Home Energy Plan to access a free digital pathway showing suggested energy saving improvements for your home. If you are a Coutts client, you can also book a free in-home energy assessment with Vibrant.
