Time to travel as adventure returns

Following three years of rolling restrictions, what’s the best way to reconnect with your adventurous side?

We spoke to two luxury travel brands about what travellers can look forward to in 2023 and the exclusive offers Coutts clients can enjoy.

  • Briggs & Riley

    Travel Bags & Accessories

2023 marks the 30th anniversary of luxury luggage purveyors Briggs & Riley, and it looks set to be a busy year with both recreational and business travel returning to the forefront. With that in mind, they’ve been increasingly supplying customers with more nuanced bags and cases which support an organised approach to packing that cuts back on weight and bulk – packing cubes, laundry bags and shoe covers are all tipped to sell well in 2023. Likewise, compact carry-on cases for short business trips are also in demand.

In line with this, the best-selling Baseline collection will be getting a springtime limited edition, plum colour makeover. “The plum is a beautiful colour and co-ordinates with existing bags in our collection, so we predict this is going to be very popular,” says Business Manager Stuart Webb. “Also, in September, we are launching our first ever partly recycled bag collection. The range will be made of partly recycled materials and consist of backpacks, briefs and day bags.”

That approach to sustainability is well supported as Briggs & Riley offer to repair any functional aspect of their bags, free of charge under their ‘simple as that’ guarantee. And, as and when a bag is no longer required by its previous owner, their annual luggage trade-in arrangement recycles second-hand bags by giving them to families in need throughout North America.

In January, THANK YOU FROM COUTTS members will also receive a free washbag with each e-gift card redeemed. The Deluxe Hangable Wash Bag is the perfect wash bag for those who love to be organised, with multiple pockets and sections for storing items of all shapes and sizes. For those who seek class as well as functionality (or who just don’t want to get their toiletries confused with their partner’s), they can also be personalised with your initials.

THANK YOU FROM COUTTS members can receive a free Briggs & Riley washbag worth £99 with every £250 and £1,000 Briggs & Riley e-gift card redeemed via THANK YOU FROM COUTTS in January.

  • Mr & Mrs Smith

    Luxury Travel

After nearly three years of fluctuating lockdowns, it’s clear Mr & Mrs Smith clients are coming into 2023 with a renewed travel bug. The travel club for hotel lovers has seen a pick-up in more adventurous bookings already this year, meeting such demand with a curated selection of new destinations.

These include Octola Private Wilderness, a 400-hectare snowglobe inside the Arctic Circle, and a new clutch of hotels in the Azores. Further afield, they’ve secured Habitas Namibia – an off-grid reserve that’s quietly redefining safari; while their south-east Asian offering has been complemented by Cap Karoso – a remote Indonesian island where arrival involves a shamanic ceremony – and the hedonistic Standard Bangkok hotel. Meanwhile, Baltimore’s flamboyant Ulysses, inspired by film-maker John Walters, and the stylish Soho House Nashville are perfect for urbanites looking to explore heady blends of Americana.

Building such a global travel portfolio should not compromise environmental considerations, says CEO Tamara Lohan. “Eco-travel was a buzzword way before the pandemic, and in 2023 it’s nothing less than a given that we behave sustainably and expect similar practices from our partners,” she says. As a B-Corp certified business, Mr & Mrs Smith aims to work only with hotels that make use of renewable energy, are built exclusively with sustainable materials and are having a positive impact on the community around them.

2023 will also see sustainability in how getaways are planned, says Tamara, as remote working and ‘slow travel’ take hold. “Our members are embarking on more road trips, particularly in Europe – stopping at a string of hotels across many countries that saves on air miles,” she says. This year, as they celebrate their 20th anniversary Mr & Mrs Smith will also be donating £5 of every e-gift card sale to their conservation partners the World Land Trust and the Blue Marine Foundation.

THANK YOU FROM COUTTS members can receive a double loyalty bonus from Mr & Mrs Smith when booking a trip in January using a £250, £500 or £1,000 gift card redeemed via THANK YOU FROM COUTTS.
